THEIR BACKGROUNDS

They were twelve Jewish men whom Jesus called to follow him during his three-year ministry on earth
The twelve disciples were from the Galilee region in the north except for Judas Iscariot, who was from Judea in the south.
Their occupations ranged from fisherman to tax collectors and revolutionaries.
Some were married (Mark 1:29-31; 1 Cor 9:3-6).
Some were well-versed in Scripture (John 1:46).

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN FACTIONS SPLIT A CHURCH?

The church in Corinth split probably for the same reasons modern-day churches do. Some people identified with the ministry style of Peter. Others were drawn to Paul’s personality. Still others felt a connection with Apollos. We rightly learn from the insights of spiritual leaders, but crowing about one’s own leader and criticizing all others is wrong, petty, and immature.

The idea of sacrifice is at the core of the Christian faith. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ is one of the central truths of the gospel. However, this important element of the Christians faith finds its origin and explanation in the sacrificial system of the Old Testament. It is true that Jesus’ sacrifice has made obsolete the Old Testament sacrificial system (Hebrews 10:1-18). However, the original readers of the letter to the Hebrews knew and understood the sacrificial system of the Old Testament. From that knowledge, they were able to more fully understand Jesus’ work on the cross.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG WITH THE LORD’S SUPPER?

The early church often met for a fellowship meal, followed by observance of the Lord’s Supper. At Corinth, the initial meal had become a drunken, disorderly feast characterized by arguments and selfishness.

DEFINITION OF THE DAY (DEMONIC POSSESSION PT2)

The NT distinguishes between demonic possession and physical disease. Matthew 4:24 states that Jesus healed “all those who were afflicted, those suffering form various diseases and intense pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralytics” (HCSB). Thus the theory that demonic possession should be equated with epilepsy or any other neurotic ailment is weak. Some of the demons made assertions of Christ’s divinity when the disciples did not show such recognition. Mental or physical illness would not impart this type of knowledge (Mark 5:13; Luke 4:33-35; 8:29-33).

SUBMIT TO PEOPLE IN CHARGE

Peter gives much the same advice that Paul did in letters he wrote to a pair of churches in the same area: Ephesus and Colosse. Most Bible experts say Paul was probably in Rome from about AD 60 to 62 awaiting trial when he wrote those two letters. Perhaps Peter visits him there, hears what’s happening in Turkey, and decides to add his advice in a separate letter to all churches in the region. Silas, the man who helps Peter write this letter, is also one of Paul’s associate ministers.
