MEN OF THE BIBLE (SIMON PETER “ORDINARY GUY, EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY”)

According to Matthew 4:18-20, “As [Jesus] was walking along the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, since they were fishermen. ‘Follow Me,’ He told them, “and I will make you fish for people!’ Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.”

CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW ELEMENTS (MATTHEW)

TEACHING ABOUT GOD – The first Gospel shows God in action, taking the initiative in fulfilling the Scriptures about the coming Messiah. It teaches about the Trinity, and it contributes greatly to the Christian understanding of the deity of Christ. Jesus’ constant reference to Himself as the Son of Man plays a key role in understanding Jesus’ earthly mission.

EVERYDAY LIFE IN BIBLE TIMES (FLOG,WHIP,SCOURAGE PT2)

The Romans appear to have at least two types of whips for flogging. The more serious of the two, the flagellum, consisted of a handle with leather straps attached to it. Knots were tied into the straps with bone or sharp metal bits tied onto them. This was the device used prior to crucifixion to brutalize those condemned so severely that they would be incapable of effective resistance. There was no limit to the number of blows that could be struck, and the beating often continued until the flesh hung down in bloody strips.

BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (JESUS’ CUP OF SUFFERING)

This verse is part of Jesus’ prayer of agony in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest and crucifixion. This “cup” to which He referred was the suffering He would endure on the cross as an atoning sacrifice for sin.

WHAT KIND OF BODY DID JESUS HAVE AFTER HIS RESURRECTION?

It was a flesh-and-bones body like ours, recognizable to His followers (John 20:20), still scarred by the crucifixion (John 20:25-29; Revelation 5:6), and able to eat food (Luke 24:30-33, 41-43).

DEFINITION OF THE DAY (LAST SUPPER)

cf

The last meal Jesus shared with His disciples before the crucifixion. The high point of the Bible and central event of the ages is the passion (betrayal, crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension) of Jesus Christ. All that goes before it in the Bible anticipates His coming. All that comes after presents the full meaning of the person and work of Christ. Continue reading DEFINITION OF THE DAY (LAST SUPPER)

MAKING DECISIONS BY LOT

Cast-Lots

This verse refers to the ancient custom of casting lots to settle disputes or make important decisions (read Josh 1:7). We might compare the practice to flipping a coin or drawing straws in modern times. Continue reading MAKING DECISIONS BY LOT

MEN OF THE BIBLE “THOMAS: BELIEF INTERRUPTED”

thomas-the-incredulity-of-st-thomas-by-caravaggio

For all we know, Thomas may have been the boldest of Jesus 12 disciples-a paragon of courageous service and unshakable loyalty. The New Testament offers evidence to support the notion. After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, some of the disciples were reluctant to return to Judea, where an attempt had been made of Jesus life. Thomas was the one who finally said, “Let’s go so that we may die with Him” (John 11:16) Continue reading MEN OF THE BIBLE “THOMAS: BELIEF INTERRUPTED”

BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES “PUNISHMENT BY SCOURGING”

hqdefault

It was customary among the Romans to scourge or flog a condemned criminal before he was executed. A scourage was a whip with sharp pieces of metal or bone imbedded in the leather. The back and chest of the criminal were struck repeatedly with this whip until the flesh was severely lacerated, sometimes all the way down to the bone. BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (THE CRUCIFIXION SITE)

sd4k9Adehecgb  The exact location of Jesus’ crucifixion is unknown, although there are three suggested sites (1) The Church of the Holy Sepulcher inside the walls of Jerusalem, (2) an unidentified place outside the city walls, and (3) Gordon’s Calvary, a hillside site above a large rock that resembles a skull. This third site is also outside the city walls. Continue reading BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (THE CRUCIFIXION SITE)
