The number thousand (or thousands) in the Bible is sometimes a literal number, but in many cases it is used to create a large round number. Hebrew and the other Semitic languages used approximations to express large numbers because they were rarely needed for small populations and tiny kingdom. Eyewitnesses to Jesus’ life, Peter among them, verified what really happened. We see Jesus through the eyes of Peter and other disciples who testify to the truth through stories such as the Transfiguration, where God declares Jesus to be His true Son, Peter spent three years with Jesus, observing His miracles and ingesting His teaching. When Jesus asked, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter confessed that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God.
