WHAT HAPPENS WHEN FACTIONS SPLIT A CHURCH?

The church in Corinth split probably for the same reasons modern-day churches do. Some people identified with the ministry style of Peter. Others were drawn to Paul’s personality. Still others felt a connection with Apollos. We rightly learn from the insights of spiritual leaders, but crowing about one’s own leader and criticizing all others is wrong, petty, and immature.

The point of the message is the message itself, not the messenger. Our first allegiance is to Jesus. Leaders in the church should be respected, not used as mascots for factions.

1 CORINITHIANS 1:11-13 – 11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
