Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian Empire, which dominated the Ancient Near East for about 300 years (900 -605 B.C.). It began its rise to world power about the time of the division of the Hebrew kingdom, at the close of Solomon’s reign. It gradually absorbed and destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel.

There’s only one sentence of prophecy in this book. And it turns out wrong: “Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!” (Jonah 3:4).

WHAT EXPLAINS A PAGAN KING’S EAGER REPENTANCE?

The king of Nineveh repented, and we wonder why. The only explanation for the king’s confession (and for your own) is that God fills the emptiness in the human heart so effectively that our normal and natural response (albeit with the help of God Himself) is to seek God’s forgiveness and comfort. The stubborn person who resists and refuses God’s overture-not the repentant sinner-should be the cause of bewilderment.

MEN OF THE BIBLE (JONAH “RUNNING FROM GOD”)

Jonah stands alone among the prophets of the Old Testament. Certainly he was the only one (that we know of) to spend three days in the digestive tract of a fish. In the bigger picture, though, he was the only one (that we know of) to flatly refuse an assignment from God.

The Bible records several instances of suicide (Abimelech-Judg 9:54; Samson-Judg 16:29-30; Saul-1 Sam 31:4; Saul’s armor beaer-1 Sam 31:5 Ahithophel-2 Sam 17:23; Zimri-1 Kings 16:18; and Judas-Matt 27:5; cp. Acts 16:27). Of these, the deaths of Abimelech and Saul could be called “assisted” suicide. With the possible exception of Samson (whose death may be better termed “martyrdom”), the Bible presents each person who committed suicide as an individual whose behavior is clearly not to be emulated.

In its biblical sense repentance refers to a deeply seated and through turning from self to God. HOW CAN A PERSON SURVIVE SEVENTY-TWO HOURS INSIDE A FISH?

The sheer unlikelihood of this event has caused many to interpret Jonah’s book as allegory or parable, not history as such. Indeed, no other account exists of a human being surviving such an event.
