SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY (ACTS 1:9-26 JESUS ASCENDS TO HEAVEN, THE UPPER ROOM PRAYER MEETING, MATTHIAS CHOSEN)

And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

DEFINITON OF THE DAY (LORD/JESUS AS LORD PT1)

Kurios is the word normally employed in the NT to speak of Jesus as Lord. The word, however, has a wide range of reference, being used of God (Acts 2:34), Jesus (Luke 10:1), humans (Acts 16:19), and angels (Acts 10:4). When characters in the Gospels speak of Jesus as Lord, they often mean no more than “sir.” At other times the designation Kurios expresses a full confession of

HOW DID THE DISCIPLES DIE?

Though the Bible records the fate of only Judas Iscariot and James, early church leaders said most of the others died as martyrs-killed for preaching about Jesus.

SIMON PETER. “Crucified at Rome with his head downward,” wrote Origen, a church leader in the AD 200s. This seems to fulfill what Jesus told Peter would happen: “When you are old, you will stretch out your hands . . . ‘Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God” (John 21:18-19).

ANDREW, PETER’S BROTHER. Crucified on an X-shaped cross, according to the Acts of Andrew, a book written in the AD 200s.

MEN OF THE BIBLE “THOMAS: BELIEF INTERRUPTED”

thomas-the-incredulity-of-st-thomas-by-caravaggio

For all we know, Thomas may have been the boldest of Jesus 12 disciples-a paragon of courageous service and unshakable loyalty. The New Testament offers evidence to support the notion. After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, some of the disciples were reluctant to return to Judea, where an attempt had been made of Jesus life. Thomas was the one who finally said, “Let’s go so that we may die with Him” (John 11:16) Continue reading MEN OF THE BIBLE “THOMAS: BELIEF INTERRUPTED”

MEN OF THE BIBLE “THOMAS” MOST LIKELY TO BE NEGATIVE

Thomas was a “glass is half empty” disciple with a side order of truth issue. Maybe, like Thomas, you refuse to believe anything unless you see it with your own eyes. Continue reading MEN OF THE BIBLE “THOMAS” MOST LIKELY TO BE NEGATIVE

THE TWELVE DISCIPLES

WHO ARE THE TWELVE DISCIPLES?

THEIR BACKGROUNDS

  • They were twelve Jewish men whom Jesus called to follow him during his three-year ministry on earth.
  • The twelve disciples were from the Galilee region in the north except for Judas Iscariot, who was from Judea in the south.
  • Their occupations ranged from fisherman to tax collectors and revolutionaries.
  • Some were married (Mark 1:29-31; 1 Cor 9:3-6).
  • Some were well-versed in Scripture (John 1:46).

WHO DIED AND MADE YOU AN APOSTLE?

“JESUS”

That’s the answer Paul gives to critics who say he isn’t in the same league as Jesus’ disciples-a dozen men who share the highest office in the early church. The closest the Bible comes to defining apostle is when the word first shows up-when Jesus” 11 disciples search for someone to replace Judas. Candidates must come “from among the men who were with us the entire time we were traveling with the Lord Jesus-from the time he was baptized by John until the day he was taken from us” (Acts 1:21-22). There’s no hint that Paul ever met Jesus during that time. Paul didn’t even convert until about five years after
