BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (GOD IN HUMAN FORM)

During Paul’s first missionary journey, he and Barnabas visited the city of Lystra in the province of Lycaonia. After Paul preached the gospel to the people of the city, he healed a crippled man. They were so impressed that they hailed the missionaries as pagan gods who had come down to them “in the likeness of men” (Acts 14:11).

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN THE BIBLE (WATAER SUPPLY)

Water provision was a necessity if a city was to withstand a siege. Some cities had easy access to water. jericho had a spring, and the water used by Mary at Nazareth is still flowing in the city today. Other places had some difficulty in providing an adequate, secure water supply.

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS OF THE BIBLE (GAMES PT2)

Although dice were in use, no form of gambling was allowed among the Jewish people. This may have resulted from the feeling that dice were sacred in some way. The high priest used two discs, black on one side and white on the other, shaken from the pouch or breastplate to discern the will of God (Exodus 28:30; 1 Samuel 28:6). It was used to find out a guilty party (Joshua 7:16-21), and in New Testament times the person who replaced Judas Iscariot as one of the Twelve was chosen by lot (Acts 1:26).

BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (AN ANCIENT MEAL)

This is a good description of an ancient Middle Eastern meal in Old Testament times. The meal consisted of bread baked from wheat flour (Genesis 18:6), milk, butter or curds, and meat from a freshly slaughtered calf (Genesis 43:16). A typical meal of this period consisted of a vegetable stew with no meat, so Abraham probably provided the meat as a special delicacy for his guests. The milk was probably goat milk.

BIBLE CUSTOMS & CURIOSITIES (EQUAL ACCESS TO GOD)

This veil, or curtain, separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place in the Jewish temple at Jerusalem. Only the high priest was allowed behind this curtain, and he could go into the Most Holy Place only once a year-on the Day of Atonement-to offer sacrifices to atone for the sins of the people (Lev 16:34).

MANNERS & CUSTOMS OF THE BIBLE (MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS)

Music was very much a part of religious life, and musicians had always been important. They were classed along with smiths and those who possessed flocks and herds. Jubal was recognized as the father of all who played the pipe (Gen 4:20-21). We therefore find many examples of music in Bible times. The instruments that were played are not always easy to identify from their Hebrew names, but the following instruments (arranged alphabetically) are the most important ones used:

BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (HOLINESS AND HORSES)

Zechariah foresaw a future time when all of the nations would worship the one true God. The praise of the Lord would be so widespread that even horses would have “HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD” inscribed on the bells on their harnesses. These are the same words embroidered on the hat worn by the high priest of Israel (Exod 28:36).

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS OF THE BIBLE (BASIC CLOTHING)

Clothes were not easy to come by for most people and were very costly. The poor had only the clothes they stood up in. It was therefore realistic to trade a person for a pair of shoes (Amos 2:6), and it was quite revolutionary for John Baptist to tell people to give away spare coats (Luke 3:11). It is therefore interesting to see that in their codification of the law in the first

BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (A MAN WITH AN INKHORN)

In Ezekiel’s vision, he saw six men from the north arrive in Jerusalem. They probably represented the Babylonian army, whom God had appointed as His instrument of judgement against His people because of their sin and idolatry.

BIBILE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (BURIAL IN CAVES)

This is the first burial recorded in the Bible. Sarah was probably buried soon after she died. In the hot climate of Palestine, a body would quickly begin to decompose.
