MANNERS AND CUSTOMS OF THE BIBLE (SEINE NET FISHING)

The seine net was about eight feet (three meters) broad and hundreds of feet long. It was suspended in the water like a net fence, kept afloat by corks, and weighted down with stone weights to keep it vertical. Either a single boat would make a huge circle with the net, or two boats would suspends the net between them and make a sweep toward the shore. When the net was in a tight circle, It was possible to pull in the lower rope so that the net formed a huge bag from which the fish could not escape.

JOHN CONTINUES TO HONOR JESUS

After Jesus launched His public ministry, He began to preach and baptize in the same area where John the Baptist was working. Jesus invited at least two of John’s disciples to join His ministry team. One of these was Andrew, the fisherman and brother of Peter. The other is unknown, but many people think he was the apostle John, the son of Zebedee. If John the Baptist objected to these disciples leaving him to follow Jesus, we see no hint of such an objection in the biblical account (John 1:35-39).

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY (LUKE 5:1-11 “THE FIRST DISCIPLES”)

1.And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

THE SELECTION OF THE TWELVE

12_Apostles_Activity       All three of the synoptic Gospels give an account of Jesus’ selection of His disciples. But only Luke reveals that He spent an entire night in prayer before making His choice (Luke 6:12-16). These were the men who would continue His ministry after Her death, resurrection, and ascension.
