David’s courage as a warrior is legendary. His bravery was evident even during his teenage years when he faced down and defeated the Philistine giant Goliath. But a good military leader needs more than personal courage. Above all. he must be able to recruit, motivate, and deploy an army. King David excelled in these abilities.

DEFINITION OF THE DAY (FIRST BORN PT1)

First son born to a couple and required of newly married people was believed to represent the prime of human vigor (Gen 49:3; Ps 78:51). In memory of the death of Egypt’s firstborn and the preservation of the firstborn of Israel, all the firstborn of Israel, both of man and beast, belonged to Yahweh (Exod 13:2,15; cp. 12:12-16). This meant that the people of Israel attached unusual value to the eldest son and assigned special privileges and responsibilities to him.

BIBLE CUSTOMS AND CURIOSITIES (JESUS AND HYPERBOLE)

This statement from Jesus is what is known as hyperbole-a deliberate exaggeration in order to make a point. We might compare this to the modern statement, “It’s raining cats and dogs.” We don’t mean that actual cats and dogs are falling from the sky. We are saying that the rain is coming down in a torrential downpour.
