SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY (DANIEL 4:26-34)

26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.

27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

DEFINITION OF THE DAY (NAMING PT1)

In biblical tradition the task of naming a child generally fell to the mother (Gen 29:31; 30:24; 1 Sam 1:20) but could be performed by the father (Gen 16:15; Exod 2:22) and in exceptional cases by someone other than a parent (Exod 2:10; Ruth 4:17). The last son of Jacob and Rachel received a name from each parent, Jacob altering the name Rachel gave (Gen 35:18). Naming could even be attributed to God, originating through a divine birth announcement (Gen 17:19; Luke 1:13). Naming took place near birth in the OT and on the eighth day accompanying circumcision in NT narratives (Luke 1:59; 2:21).

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE PT3

AUTHOR AND DATE OF WRITING:

Luke, perhaps ca. A.D. 60-61

The book is anonymous, but early Christian tradition uniformly affirmed that Luke composed this Gospel as well as Acts (See Author and Date of Writing for Acts for reasons supporting Luke’s authorship of Acts.) The dedications of Theophilus, the similar Greek style and vocabulary, and special shared emphases of the books (such as prayer and joy) all point to common authorship.

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY ROMANS 6:14-22)

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

DEFINITION OF THE DAY (HOMELESSNESS)

In a sense, all Christians, like Abrham, are “homeless” in that they are but so journers in this world (Heb 11:13), This reality, however, must not lessen the impact of the responsibility of Christians who are able to own a house or pay rent on an apartment towards persons who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to do either.

GOD’S STORY

When the Events of This Book Happened:

During Jesus’s earthly life, 7 B.C. – A.D. 30

Luke’s Gospel begins earlier than either Matthew or Mark, with the announcement of John’s birth, around 7 B.C. it ends with his ascent to heaven in the spring of A.D. 30. Jesus was born before Herod the Great died in 4 B.C., possibly two or three years earlier. The probable year of Jesus’s birth is 6 B.C.

SCRIPTURES OF THE DAY (HEBREWS 1:1-10)

1. God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

SCRITPURE OF THE DAY (MATTHEW 6:1-18)

1. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

WHO’S WHO AND WHERE’S WHERE IN THE BIBLE (EDEN)

This homeland of the first humans Adam and Eve-may have been paradise for them, but it’s torment for Bible experts. Scholars can’t figure out where it was or even what it was. At times, the creation story in Genesis says Eden was a garden. Other times, Eden was a region that had a garden: “God planted a garden in Eden” (Gen 2:8). Perhaps it was both-the name of the garden and the territory, the way “Babylon” once described an empire and its Captial city.
