Often called a kinsman-redeemer, this person was responsible for protecting members of the extended family-a big brother, so to speak.

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY (PROVERBS 5: 1-23, AVOID ADULTERY)
5 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.
3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

Abner was the commander of King Saul’s army. After Saul’s death, David became king. Joab, a military leader who was loyal to David, killed Abner because Abner had tried to install one of Saul’s sons as the new King.

The three letters of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus are also known as the “pastoral epistles” because they contain practical guidelines for the training and choosing of leaders in the church. Leadership qualities cited here include:
- A good reputation. Someone who has the respect of other people has already shown his or her ability to put others first.
- Marital faithfulness. Loyalty to the primary commitment of marriage usually foretells loyalty to the rest of one’s commitments.
- Children who believe and act like it. Can a leader in the church hope to disciple others if those closest to him or her do not embrace the faith?
MANNERS AND CUSTOMS OF THE BIBLE (GAMES PT2)
Although dice were in use, no form of gambling was allowed among the Jewish people. This may have resulted from the feeling that dice were sacred in some way. The high priest used two discs, black on one side and white on the other, shaken from the pouch or breastplate to discern the will of God (Exodus 28:30; 1 Samuel 28:6). It was used to find out a guilty party (Joshua 7:16-21), and in New Testament times the person who replaced Judas Iscariot as one of the Twelve was chosen by lot (Acts 1:26).

1.Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
3 Israel was holiness unto the Lord, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the Lord.

Either the number is a cryptic way of identifying an actual person (equal to the sum of the numeric equivalents of the letters in a name), or it is a symbol of evil. The latter interpretation derives form the idea of perfection associated with the number seven (seven days of Creation, seven lampstands, etc.) and the idea of completion associated with the number three (the three persons of the Trinity). By these terms, the number six repeated three times would indicate complete imperfection, that is, evil.

This verse is a guideline, not a rule without exception. Peter and John paid no heed to government edicts in Acts 4. The Old Testament’s preeminent statesman, Daniel, refused to comply with government strictures on prayer (Daniel 6). When civil law clearly contravenes divine command, biblical precedent calls for appropriate civil disobedience.

Children normally played in the open because it was dark inside the houses. Even though outdoor games and toys predominated, there were many indoor games as well. The outdoor games included “hopscotch,” running, use of bow and arrow for target and distance shooting (1 Samuel 20:20-21; Lamentations 3:12), aiming stones into a pit, marbles aimed through three arches, and games with balls (throwing and catching, juggling).

This is a good description of an ancient Middle Eastern meal in Old Testament times. The meal consisted of bread baked from wheat flour (Genesis 18:6), milk, butter or curds, and meat from a freshly slaughtered calf (Genesis 43:16). A typical meal of this period consisted of a vegetable stew with no meat, so Abraham probably provided the meat as a special delicacy for his guests. The milk was probably goat milk.
