DOES THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT PERMIT SEXUAL ACITIVITY, AS LONG AS ADULTERY IS AVOIDED?

The spirit of the seventh commandment is taught by Jesus Matthew 5:27-30. Looking lustfully at a member of the opposite sex is an action far short of intercourse. Yet Jesus warns that this common daily occurrence violates the intentions of the commandment.

Men are hormonally wired for frequent sex with multiple partners. God’s commandment is to direct that appetite into a faithful, monogamous, heterosexual marriage, a relationship endorsed throughout the Bible (Gen 2:23-24).

Popular culture offers multiple opportunities for exciting lustful desires, for enhancing the adulterous imagination, and for testing and breaking the rules of common morality and biblical teaching. The seventh commandment advises everyone to focus sexual pleasure in one’s marriage and to avoid other sexual appetites.

EXODUS 20:14 – 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
