WHY WERE PENALTIES FOR SEXUAL SIN SO SEVERE?

The Israelites found themselves in the midst of a Canaanite culture that was awash in pagan immorality. These heathen nations had merged spirituality with sensuality to create a very alluring and very dangerous combination. To keep His people from joining this around-the-clock celebration of  perversion, God decreed severe punishment for those guilty of sexual sin.           All sin is serious, and God hates any deviation from holiness. But sexual perversion is especially insidious. Why? Because it rejects God’s original intention in making humans “male and female.” It violates the sanctity of marriage and family. It creates addictive and idolatrous behaviour, leads to severe emotions problems, and sometimes to disease and death. It elevates physical desire over spiritual priorities. The New Testament adds that believers who sin sexually are sinning against their own bodies (1 Corinthians 6:18). This turns God’s residence into a house of ill repute!

Leviticus 18:29- For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people.
