The state of being a Nazirite is the result of a vow taken by someone who will thereafter be “separated” or “dedicated” to the Lord in a special way.
Nazirites were not priests but were used by God as examples of holiness to the larger population. Among the Nazirites were Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist. They led ascetic lives, denying themselves many physical comforts. The drinking wine was also forbidden to them.

Amos 2:11-12 – 11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the Lord.
12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.
