King’s were, anointed by having olive oil poured on their heads (2 Kings 11:12). This was also an act of courtesy and hospitality performed by hosts for their guests.
David the psalmist compared God’s grace to such an anointing. He felt as if God had held nothing back-that He had blessed him beyond measure with His love and mercy.
Like David, another psalmist in the book of Psalms also praised the Lord, comparing His blessing to being “anointed with fresh oil” (Psalm 92:10).
PSALM 23:5 – Thou [God] anointed my head with oil, my cup runneth over.
