Understanding the timing of Jesus’ birth requires looking closely at the world He entered. One of the strongest historical indicators comes from the Roman census that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. Luke records that “there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed” and that Joseph went “to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child” (Luke 2:1–5).
