Contaminated water was a problem in Bible times, just as it still is in many parts of the world. Paul’s practical advice to Timothy was to drink a little wine along with the water that he had been drinking, which had caused a stomach ailment.
In addition to serving as the common beverage of Bible times, wine was used for medicinal purposes. People drank it to ease physical pain and suffering (Mark 15:23), as well as mental distress (Proverbs 31:6). Sometimes it was poured on wounds (Luke 10:34).
1 TIMOTHY 5:23 – Drink no longer water [Stop drinking only water, NIV], but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.
