The New Testament Version identifies Joseph of Arimathea as the noted member of the Jewish Sanhedrin. This high Jewish court had condemned Jesus for blasphemy and recommended to Pilate just a few days before that He be executed (Mk 13:9).
When was Joseph when Jesus was dragged before the Sanhedrin for trial? Why did he not step forward in His defense? We don’t know. But we do know that Joseph risked his reputation with that judicial body when he claimed the body of Jesus and laid it in his own new tomb.
Even if Joseph was a “secret disciple.” of Jesus his bold and kind act to give Him a decent burial deserves the admiration and thanks of all believers.
MARK 15:43 – Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counseller [prominent member of the Council, NIV]. . .went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved [asked for, niv] the body of jesus.
