OVERCOMING TEMPTATION: LESSONS FROM SCRIPTURES

Temptation is a universal human experience. From the moment we are born, we are tempted by various desires, whether it is for food, comfort, pleasure, or power. The Bible, the holy book of Christianity, is filled with stories of people who faced temptation and overcame it. In this article, we will explore some lessons from scripture on how to overcome temptation.

Lesson 1: Recognize the source of temptation

The Bible teaches us that temptation comes from three sources: the world, the flesh, and the devil. The world refers to the sinful culture that surrounds us, while the flesh refers to our own sinful nature. The devil, also known as Satan, is a spiritual being who opposes God and seeks to lead people astray.

In the book of Genesis, we see how Adam and Eve were tempted by the devil in the form of a serpent. The devil deceived them into eating the forbidden fruit, leading to their fall from grace. However, we can learn from their mistake and recognize when we are being tempted by the devil, the world, or our own flesh.

Lesson 2: Resist temptation with scripture

Jesus, in his time on earth, faced many temptations from the devil. In Matthew 4:1-11, we see how the devil tried to tempt Jesus to sin by appealing to his physical needs and desires. However, Jesus resisted temptation by quoting scripture.

When we face temptation, we can follow Jesus’ example by using scripture to resist. Memorizing verses that speak to our specific areas of weakness can help us when we are tempted. For example, if we struggle with lust, we can memorize verses like 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 or Job 31:1 to remind us of God’s standard for purity.

Lesson 3: Seek accountability and support

The Bible teaches us that we are not meant to overcome temptation alone. In James 5:16, we are instructed to confess our sins to one another and pray for each other so that we may be healed. This involves seeking accountability and support from other believers.

Having an accountability partner who can help us stay on track and pray for us when we are struggling can be a powerful tool in overcoming temptation. Additionally, being part of a community of believers who can offer encouragement and support can help us stay strong when we face temptation.

Lesson 4: Focus on the eternal rewards

Finally, the Bible teaches us to focus on the eternal rewards that come from resisting temptation. In 1 Corinthians 9:25, Paul writes about how athletes train hard and discipline their bodies to win a prize that will not last. He contrasts this with the eternal reward that comes from living a life of faith and self-control.

When we are tempted, we can remind ourselves of the eternal rewards that come from obedience to God. We can think about the joy of being in God’s presence and the rewards that await us in heaven.

In conclusion, overcoming temptation is a constant battle for every believer. However, by recognizing the source of temptation, resisting with scripture, seeking accountability and support, and focusing on eternal rewards, we can overcome temptation and live a life of faith and self-control. As we rely on God’s strength and guidance, we can grow in our faith and experience the joy of victory over sin.
