Moses had asked to see God’s glorious presence (Exodus 33:18). God responded by passing in front of Moses with all His glory, What is God’s glory? It is His character, His nature, His way of relating to His creatures. Notice that God did not give Moses a vision of HIs power and majesty but, rather, of HIs love. God’s glory is revealed in His mercy, grace, compassion, faithfulness, forgiveness, and justice. God’s love and mercy are truly wonderful, and we benefit from them, We can respond and give glory to God when our character resembles His.
EXODUS 34: 5-7
5. And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the named of the Lord.
6. And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD GOD, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.
7. Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no mean clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the father upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
(FROM THE KING JAMES HOLY BIBLE)
Then the Lord descended in the form of a pillar of cloud and stood there with him, and passed in front of him and announced the meaning of his name. “I am Jehovah, the merciful and gracious God,” he said, “slow to anger and rich in steadfast love and truth. I Jehovah, show this steadfast love to many thousands by forgiving their sins; or else I refuse to clear the guilty, and require that a father’s sins be punished in the sons and grandsons, and even later generation.”
